EGLE Expanded Triage Subsurface Investigations

Southeast, MI

Background

There are more than 16,000 sites where EGLE knows hazardous substances have been released. Risks to human health and the environment from these releases at many of these sites are not completely known and lack a party who is legally responsible for the cleanup actions necessary to address these risks. These sites are often left abandoned and blighted in our communities. To address the environmental risks associated with these properties, the State of Michigan provides funding to remediate sites and remove environmental barriers that inhibit redevelopment.

The Challenge

ERG was contracted by EGLE to perform subsurface investigations for various sites in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. The data collected by ERG is used by EGLE to assess environmental risks associated with these properties and categorize sites for possible future environmental remediation.

ERG’s Solution

ERG provided GPR (ground penetrating radar) services to identify all utilities and any orphan underground storage tanks (USTs) at the sites. Environmental drilling was contracted and overseen by ERG so that soil, groundwater, and soil gas samples could be collected from the sites. All field work was completed in a safe and timely manner. ERG generated reports for both the GPR and soil and groundwater investigations. These reports included all information gained from these investigations and the data was presented clearly and precisely.

Client Results

The reports generated by ERG are used by EGLE to categorize/prioritize future remediation operations at these sites.
