The Grand Traverse Band (GTB) of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians
Peshawbestown, MI
Background
The existing Solid Waste Management Plan, which was created in 2011, supported waste reduction by means of recycling or composting. However, Grand Traverse Band (GTB) of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians is still heavily dependent on private waste haulers for waste collection and disposal services. Most of the solid waste generated in the reservation is landfilled. The resulting expenses are extremely high.
The Challenge
ERG was hired by GTB to develop an Intergrated Solid Waste Management Plan (ISWMP) to provide guidance and methods to divert solid waste from landfills.
ERG’s Solution
ERG was hired by GTB to develop an Intergrated Solid Waste Management Plan (ISWMP) to provide guidance and methods to divert solid waste from landfills. ERG’s Solution ERG updated the existing SWMP to fulfill the USEPA requirements for an ISWMP. During this process ERG analyzed waste diversion potential, finance, compatibility with the needs of GTB, and community acceptance. Input of residents, businesses, and service providers were utilized in the update process. Historical and current solid waste management practices were evaluated in determining the impact of the new solid waste management strategies. The mechanisms and best management practices implemented by the other exemplary communities were reviewed in analyzing the impact of the plan. The newly developed ISWMP for 2024-2034 provides guidance and direction to GTB to enhance existing services and expand or develop services to fulfill the need of the residential and commercial entities.
Client Results
• ERG developed an ISWMP that was approved by the Tribal Council within the approved budget and timeline.
